Lower Mississippi Trip
Apr 28 - May 9, 2022
Monday May 2, New Orleans
Today we check out of the Hotel Monteleone and embark on the paddle wheel boat American Queen. Our first activity of the day is to walk in our group a few blocks to the Two Sisters Restaurant. The restaurant opens out onto a beautiful outdoor garden complete with a tiled running fountain, small round tables and chairs and over head bowers and birds.
A complete buffet is served inside. It is hard to make the choices for the brunch. We take our time and then walk back to our hotel to attend an hour's talk about "Creoles of Color After The Civil War". We then check out and our motor coach take us a short distance to Mardi Gras World near the Mississippi River.
Mardi Gras World is a huge warehouse where floats and brightly painted characters are put together for the annual Mardi Gras period which ends the Tuesday before Lent starts.
From there we board the American Queen steamship/paddle boat and find our staterooms. Ours is a very nice room with two twin beds, a dresser, writing desk, couch and bathroom. We soon go down to the grand dining room for dinner. There are other people on the boat besides our Road Scholar group. We are seated in a very large room and I choose a Cornish Hen dinner. After dinner Al and I explore the boat a little. We stand outside watching the river traffic and the large red paddlewheel off the stern churning around and around. It is definitely a treat and a privilege being here.
